Okay, more travel planning. I'll be in Gatineau, Quebec, in late October. I have been there before, but on the previous trip the town was called Hull. ?? In any event, this is just across the river from Ottawa. As I recall from my previous trip, Hull/Gatineau was the place that Ottawa-ians went to for good French restaurants. Anybody have specific recommendations there? Or for Ottawa?

    As always, thanks in advance.

Thw town in Quebec is Hull.

I wish that I could give you some specific recommendations but the two places that I went on my last trip to Ottawa were really very poor.

I would recommend that you stop at one of Canada's largest marlet, the Byward Market, which in my opinion is one of the best farmer's markets in North America. Not only do they have real farmers selling great produce but they have a lot of great food stands that serve a lot specialty foods. There is a pastry and pate place up front thatis phenomenal. I wish that I could be more specific but I spent only an hour there on my last trip (2004).

There is a wide variety of great restaurants in the Byward Market area as well as in the Sparks Street (pedestrian) Mall area downtown near Parliament Hill.

There are several other markets in the region that are worth a visit but Byward would be the only one to go to if time is limited.

One specialty that I saw in Ottawa that is hard to find is sponge taffy. If you can find it, try it as it is excellent. It is a hard candy that looks like a sponge. You break off a piece to eat it.

Sorry for the delay. I have been away from the computer this week.

I'm sure that everyone still calls it Hull but apparently the official name was changed two years ago:

Ville de Gatineau wrote:Gatineau, March 20, 2003 – More than 400 new street names and the official
designation of Gatineau as the name of the city, will come into effect on July 21,
resulting in a number of address changes throughout the city of Gatineau.

Continuing the theme, I'll be at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, which until several years ago was named the Museum of Man. So confusing! :)

The market sounds like a great tip, thanks! According to Mapquest, it's about 1.5 miles from the museum -- a pleasant walk if the weather is nice. I'll keep my eyes out for the taffy, too.
