Last week one of the partners at my firm asked me for ideas about putting on a wine and cheese gathering for the firm, there were only about 10 of us that Friday. This was a send-off for one of the attoneys that has been at the firm for a while. Although other festivities were planned they wanted to do something more that the cake and coffee in the morning.

The receptionist in charge of the procurment does not have car and the budget was somewhere around $100. I suggested I could bring in a box of wine glasses from home and the easiest resolution would be to take a cab to the Roosevelt Dominiks and pick up a cheese tray with a couple bottles of wine. I also threw in a few other thoughts, including offering to pick up from Cheese Stands Alone. Then I threw in Fox and Obel, Binnys and Marcy Street Market in Sam's. I had assumed F&O would be way too expensive and doubted they would deliver. As it turns out, if you couldn't tell from the subject line, Fox and Obel was our choice.

They sent over a small but more than ample cheese tray, with a mound of goat cheese, blue cheese, brie, and a few others, the tray was decorated with dried and fresh fruits. They also sent a basket of both fancy and regular crackers, though some seemed a bit stale, perhaps from being kept in a refrigerated/too moist delivery container. The setup was rounded out with three bottles of wine, nothing over the top and all people pleasing, proseco, chard and a nice merlot.

The total was ~$135, not bad considering some of the Loop gouging I have experienced. Quick, painless and not too expensive. This may be a new clutch goto place.

Fox and Obel catered my wedding two years ago. We wanted it to be low key and informal but with fantastic food. That's exactly what we got. And the price ended up being less than the usual suspects in the business, but with superior food and none of the wedding-y nonsense. People are still talking about the food at our wedding. They were great to work with and the servers and bartender they provided were perfect, respectful but not stuffy. They set up a gorgeous buffet table that looked like something out of a painting. (They even made the "cake"--carrot cake cupcakes.) I would (and have) highly recommend them.

I've been to a handful of Fox and Obel-catered events, and the quality has always been outstanding.

I used them for my daughter's baby naming, our first Thanksgiving after our daughter was born -- I wasn't cooking! -- and I will be using them again for her second birthday. I have always been pleased with the quality and the service. I still wish the store was better. It is no Dean & Deluca or Sutton Place Gourmet for those used to those East Coast places.

A guy at my office just brought in some Fox and Obel breakfast this morning. I had a Cobb Omlette. Glorious. That said, the food itself PALES in comparison to the sheer brilliance of the to-go platter. I think Ive gotten to the point in my life where the care put into the to-go prepartation is more important to me then the care put into the food itself, and this place dominates both departments.

Cobb Omlette. To-Go Genius. Good Times!
Cheetos are my favorite snack atm.

I've used Fox and Obel for many different meetings -- their sandwich boxes are great and I really like their trays. It's a bit upscale and always tasty and usually about what you'd spend almost anywhere. They also have great menus around the holidays -- it's a great thing to bring if you're in need of a contribution to a holiday meal and don't have time to cook.

They also have one of the best bakeries in town. Excellent and varied breads and really delicious sweet things. I totally recommend them.
