Just got back from San Francisco, and the menus of many of its ubiquitous sandwich shops are permeated with "dutch crunch" bread. In Dutch it's apparently called "Tijgerbrood" and in the UK "tiger" or "giraffe" bread.

In short, this crunchy bread adds a little something nice to a sandwich. Any sightings in Chicago yet?

I've seen a lot written about this in the last week or so, but I used to buy it at Dominick's or Jewel years ago (10-15). Neither are in my regular rotation these days, so I have no idea if they're still selling them.

Buerrage (at the Pilsen Farmer's Market on Sundays) sometims has giraffe bread. It's awesome! They are a small company and will take special orders. Find them on Facebook or in Pilsen

Thanks for your help, figmolly and chgoeditor. I'll be sure to check with Buerrage.

:) As a Dutch-American (albeit 350 years removed), I was disappointed I wasn't offered a discount on my "dutch crunch" sandwich in San Fran.

Speaking of tiger bread... a cute story where a a three year old girl in England wrote a letter to get a chain to rename it giraffe bread.

Finally got around to trying Soulwich in Evanston this evening. When I opened up my Indonesian Ginger BBQ Sandwich (with pork), what did I see staring up at me? A bread that closely resembles San Francisco's delicious "dutch crunch" sandwich bread! Ash, the owner, told me it took some doing to get the bread the way he wanted it (including a younger, more open-minded bread baker). Whatever you want to call it, it's delicious--both the bread and that great Indonesian Ginger BBQ Sandwich!
