Finally was able to try the Harvest Room this evening. I was very excited to get there as it fills a huge hole for dining in the south burbs, a farm to table type restaurant.
It has been open about 3 months now, and I would still consider it a work in progress. The Harvest room has a lot of potential, but has a lot of work to get there. The service showed some real flashes such as offering toys to kids shortly after entering, and when a couple started craning their necks looking for their server, the bartender made a bee line over to them asking if he cold get them anything. Unfortunately, the server didn't know all that much about the different items and their preparation, which since they cater also to vegan and gluten free audiences, could be problematic.
As to the food, the prices are exceptionally reasonable for what they offer, $14-21 for most entrees, which are mostly from local area farms, with fair size portions. I had the Steak medallions au poivre, which had a lovely cognac peppercorn sauce with great quality mushrooms. However, the beef was rather tough. My wife had had the lamb burger which was very juicy and well prepared. We ordered the gluten free burger from my son, though what wasn't explained to us was that instead of it coming with a gluten free roll, they just provided the burger on the plate without any bun. Salads were fresh, the soup of the day was a pot roast soup, which was a glorified vegetable beef soup.
I definitely will go back again and try other items, here's hoping that they make the necessary improvements.
