sorry if already posted, sounds promising for us far north siders.

Edgewater will soon be home to a new BBQ and southern comfort restaurant known as Pearl’s, which is slated to open in 2014 at 5352 N Broadway....Owners Danny and Annie Beck are no strangers to the restaurant and culinary scene, as Danny once served as executive chef for House of Blues and Annie is an award winning pastry chef. Together, they own Sunflour Bakery and Danny has been owner/operator of Lakeview’s Toons Bar & Grill since 1998.

New Pan Asian Fusion place in Gold Coast and now open (soft opening) They have dim sum, sushi, thai, hot pot, etc. The dim sum is a little expensive ($8 per dish) but what do you expect from the Gold Coast? The Hot Pot price is actually good I think. Maki rolls are fair too, though the Nigiri is slightly more expensive than average.

Silk Asian Tavern in Vernon Hills is closing per their Facebook page:

    To all our followers,
Unfortunately due to a trying economy and financial constraints we are closing doors on Silk Asian Tavern. Our hopes are to find a new location that will enable us to have the success that we all hoped and dreamed for. Please continue to follow us for future updates on our new location. Thank you all for your support and patronage and we look forward to serving you in the near future.
    The management

I'm surprised they lasted this long after taking over the old Silk Mandarin restaurant.

Went today and yesterday. The food and service has been good. The inside is nice and trendy. My only complaint so far is that both the dim sum and sushi are too expensive. They need to bring that down. The portion sizes for what I've had were pretty good though and I was full after both meals.

I don't know how many pieces they give you in a dim sum order, but figure the rent has to be double (well, probably even more than double) the rent of a restaurant in Chinatown and the prices make sense given that fixed cost. There is a reason it's called the Gold Coast.

Totally agree. I still think it could come down a little, but Chinatown prices don't make sense so I agree with you on that. All the dim sum I had there was great quality though - definitely better than other places I've had.. By the way it should be noted that this is billed as "Taiwanese Dim Sum." I think that's a way of the owners saying "We are Taiwanese!" I went with my Taiwanese friend yesterday and when I told him about it he was skeptical but during it, he said the place is pretty (not FULLY) authentic. I like that they have Hot Pot there too and they do a few dishes from a few Asian cuisines. I think it's a good addition to the area for sure.

According to a sign out front, there's going to be a Jimmy-B's Ale House opening at Route 59 and Ogden Road where the old City Island was and Boston Blackie's was before that. Also there is La Bamba Burrito opening on Geneva Road and Gary Avenue in Carol Stream. My 23 year old self would have been very excited by the news.

NOOOOOO! So surprised to learn this. Not that it was going to get people to stop going to Chinatown, but it was a notch above most local places. Seemed to be always busy with three men at the woks, and pretty established. :(

I didn't care for Vernon's and I was happy that something else was going into that spot. Happy until I saw the menu and the prices you attached! But if it's good, then I'll check it out. I do have a soft spot for the Little Red Hen down the street.

The troubling part (from the perspective of reopening anytime soon) is that they were given 10 days to correct (seemingly resolvable) problems but let the period lapse instead.

BurgerFi opened at Lake and Milwaukee in Glenview, competing with nearby Moondoggies (fast food), North Branch (burgers and pizza), TGIFriday's (chain) and Johnnie's (basic grill restaurant) for your burger attention. From the website, appears to be a Florida-based chain, on the order of a Smashburger or Tom and Eddie's. "Natural" burgers, hot dogs, fries, onion rings, shakes.

    Me too.

Were the crepes the best ever? No, but they were exactly the same as they were in 1972, and that was good enough. So was everything else about the place. The same as in 1972, and good enough. A bit of Chicago is dying. We'll have to get there one more time before it goes.

Hutch is opening this Thursday (July 18th) in the old Socca space on 3301 N. Clark. Will be interesting to see which staff from Socca were retained and what work they did on the space. Chef Herring will definitely be missed though; I really enjoyed his cooking and he is such a great person. As Hutch is so close to where I reside, I will probably check them out some time in the next week or two.

Here is an article from a couple weeks ago in Eater with more information about Hutch: http://chicago.eater.com/archives/2013/ ... -hutch.php

Does the world need another "upscale" "natural" "designer" casual hamburger place, where the tab for two burgers, fries, drinks will be north of $30? I think not, but we'll see.

Probably not, but having one within ten minutes of my house is going to get my attention.
But I'd trade that whole corner (TGIF, Burgerfi, North Branch, Moondoggies, Wendy's, and a big fistful of Asian places none of which have been worth a second visit), for the return of Bogie's/The Loft (which was the same distance in the other direction), where I could get a good old fashioned patty melt that knocked my socks off.
