Thanks, riddlemay. Further discussion of this tangent can take place over at the new thread you started. We've moved a few posts from over here to over there, as well.

Now, let's please keep this junk drawer focused only on the accepted junk. All tangential posts will summarily deleted without warning. :P

Looks like the fire last Frday evening on N. Clark in Chicago spread to the Thai Classic Restaurant. It was a favorite of mine whenever I visited the city. Too bad. They were nice folks with good food at a reasonable price point.

They closed the Avondale location and moved it to the take out area of BellyQ. Seems more like a close than a move to me. Plus it's gone form Avondale and that's the bigger shame.

Well this one came entirely out of left field... A new restaurant located at a truck stop in Hampshire (90 and 20) will feature diner grub along with West African specialties. No website, but this article mentions some of the current menu items (benachin, domada, yassa, fufu, etc.). I'll be checking this out ASAP, for sure (if anything, I'm afraid some of the African dishes may disappear if there's not enough interest, given the location). Even the burger sounds interesting (half beef, half lamb).

By all accounts, they will be back open in at most a few days--is this really something to be noted as a "closing"???

Yes,I believe it does. If someone were to be headed there it might save them a disappointing trip.

Meanwhile the city says they never had a license and that there may be other city revenue issues. According to the city they were warned on May31.

The city closing you down for operating without a license is a lot more serious than a slap on the wrist and a small fine.
They will have to go through licensing, zoning etc. and the city will try and keep them closed as long as legally possible.
The city coiuld also fine them around 200.00 per day for everyday they were operating without a license.

    Closed

    Brando's Beef
    6838 Windsor Ave
    Berwyn, IL
    708-788-2333

Posted on their Facebook page today...

We'd like to share some news, Brando’s has decided to close its doors.

One thing in life that is guaranteed is change. While a very hard decision, it is a positive one. Gianni (co-owner) will continue to dedicate himself to the union pipefitting career he has worked so hard to build and Brian (co-owner) will open a new restaurant called “Bubba’s Place” located on Ogden and Ridgeland in Berwyn.

Thanks to each and every one of you for the continued support throughout the years. We are extremely proud of all the stomachs we satisfied and all the support we were able to provide to local businesses, schools and churches as well as those less fortunate, donating hundreds of meals to those who were in need.

The wonderful memories and solid friendships will continue on, just in new spaces and places. Make sure to stop by Bubba’s Place in a few weeks to grab a bite and say Hello!

Why would the city want to do that? The city is obligated to close a business that has no license, but after the business gets that license why would the city try to keep the business closed?

Outgoing voicemail at the (506 W) Harrison Street location indicates that it has closed and that a new location will be opening soon. No details were given but per the message, questions should be directed to their flagship store in Homewood: 708-798-8050.

For other locations -- and there sure are a lot of them -- you can check their website:

Sorry about the doomsday senario but I was misinformed. A post upthread sited that Butcher and Larder was warned a while ago about operating without a license. If they in fact did not have a license it would have taken a lot longer to re-open. Sounds more like they had a license and there was a hold issued for nonpayment of taxes or fines directly or indirectly owed to the city by an officer of the corporation.

Chicago magazine has the Evanston Dollop opening today. Any independent confirmation of this before I make my way down to Main St. and risk leaving without pie?
