New Asia Restaurant (2739 W Lawrence) has paper covering the door with the words "We closed, TY" printed on it in marker. So I guess they're hsitory.

Lickity Split (6056 N Broadway St) is opening a 2nd location, serving their frozen custard - and now baking IN HOUSE rather than purchasing from other bakeries (maybe not 100% in house, not sure, but they will be baking in this new location)...

7000 N Western Ave (corner of Western and Lunt)
    Chicago, IL 60645

They're slated to open in the spring of next year (march 2014), and have yet to officially announce this - I have an inside line on the news as it's across the street from my restaurant and the building owner eats at Rub's frequently so we chat. The location was formerly a really lame sandwich shop called "Chicago Sub", before that it was a Baskin Robbins, and before that an independent ice cream shop for years. The neighborhood is going to LOVE this, and I'm going to get really (happily) FAT. People ask me all the time, "How is it possible that you don't weigh 300 lbs owning/working at a BBQ restaurant". My answer is: "I eat a lot of BBQ, but I don't eat dessert"...well, that's no longer going to be the case.

    West Rogers Park rejoice!

    Lickity Split #2
    7000 N Western Ave.
    Chicago, IL 60645
I love comfortable food, and comfortable restaurants.

Has anyone else noticed there is a Burger King located at Jackson and Plymouth Ct ?
Its in the spot that used to house Mr Submarine. I'm not a BK fan. I never see them in the city anymore. I can't remember the last time I ate there. I remember enjoying their chocolate shakes long ago. I would be so afraid to order a fast food "ice cream" shake theses days.

    RIP Charlie Trotter

Looks like Trattoria Roma at 1535 N. Wells is gone for good, a banner on the building indicated Woodie's Flat will be opening in the space.

I rarely eat at BK at all. But there is one little trick you can do to at least go back to the old days with the burger. Ask for the burger Off The Broiler, they even have a button for it. Normally all the burgers are microwaved after they are assembled. They certainly didn't do this in the old days. You will notice an improvement for sure. But only if you are stuck at BK!

Farmer's Fridge isn't your grandfather's Automat. A new salad kiosk aims to make waves in the Chicago lunch space, combining the convenience of a vending machine with quinoa and other healthy salads. Farmer's Fridge opened yesterday at 201 N. Clark St.

Anybody know what's going on with Via Gelato on Tower Dr. in The Glen? Last time I was at their website they said they were closing temporarily but now their website is gone and the windows are papered off with no sign.

EDIT: I just called management office and they are indeed closed. A pity ... I rather enjoyed their paninis and pasta side.

Okay, let's see: failure to capitalize name of newspaper; misspelling of name of paper's chief food critic; grammatical misuse of infinitive in first clause; awkward verb usage in second clause. Somebody get me an adult.

I think of all the chains I enjoy a Whopper the most. :) Must be the mayo which is foreign in the Chicago area.

On another note, last Monday, McDonalds has raised the price of the McDouble to $1.50 or $1.80 with two slices of cheese (Double Cheeseburger). :(

Opening soon Las Delicias Pupuseria Restaurante sign in window of storefront at 4010-12 West Montrose. Other signs refer to pupuseria and more restaurant coming soon. This looks like it may be the third incarnation after locations on Western Avenue and 3300 West Montrose came and went.

The storefront housed 7 Mares, which went through several managements and periods of erratic hours before finally closing. The last version had a sign on the west side of the building advertising Arabic and Mexican food. It closed before I had a chance to find out what that was.

Hoosier Mama Evanston is officially open. The space doesn't have the charm of the original, but on the plus side, you can actually get a seat. It's a little chaotic today, so don't go if you're in a hurry. Prices look to be higher than at the other store, unsurprisingly.

Since it's been so long since the latest Highland Park news...two new openings and a third in the works.

First is technically Highwood. Fish Head Restaurante & Cantina, which looks to be a seafood-based South American place is open at 810 Sheridan Road in the strip mall with Cluckers and Sweet Pea across from Fort Sheridan.

Back in HP, Ravinia Coffee Station opened at the corner of St. John's and Roger Williams between Abigail's and Baker Boys, replacing Java Love, which no one seemed to love very much. Should be interesting to see if there is enough commuter demand to keep it in business, especially since Baker Boys pours a pretty good cup two doors down and has unbeatable pastries and sweets. RCS will be offering Once Upon a Bagel bagels and Bent Fork pastries according to its website.

And buried in anothesomething called the Lucky Fish Deli will be opening behind the Mean Weiner in Highwood, it looks like in the old Maria's space. Since Mean Weiner is a OUAB offshoot, I am guessing Lucky Fish will be, too. l be, too.

Couldn't find a website for either fish, but RCS has one: http://www.raviniacoffeestation.com/

Lets's not forget the closed LD branch that was on North Clark in RP, which was another Pupuseria previously (a very good one too), and prior to that, coincidentally, a restaurant called 7 Mares. I don't know if that 7mares was related to the one that occupied the space that Las Delicias newest endeavor is moving into.

Does anyone know what's happening in the spaces adjacent to Binny's on Marcey in Lincoln Park? Construction crews are working both on the long empty part of the plaza that's directly connected to Binny's and on the building that used to be Smith & Hawken, but I didn't see an informative permit. A Binny's expansion?

I read the link, and I still can't imagine what they're going to do with that much space! The existing store is huge. I don't doubt the acumen of the Binstein family, who don't seem to make a lot of mistakes, so hats-off to their ability to imagine a need for this when I can't.
