So this weekend I'm holding a small party to watch the new episode of "Doctor Who," and I want to include foods that are themed with the show or with the U.K. If you ever watched it you know that the Doctor once expressed a liking for "fish sticks and custard" - he dipped one in the other. I don't really want to serve custard as a dipping sauce and I was wondering if any of you had an idea for a substitute that I can make to can be served with fish sticks?

Also, I'm taking ideas for themed snacks for this party, if you have any! They can't be too involved, because I'm taking my kid to a Selena Gomez concert the night before, and will really only have Saturday morning to prep for the party. I was thinking Dalek-shaped gingerbread cookies, because the Doctor always wants to be regenerated as a "ginger" and the one thing I bought for the party was a Dalek cookie cutter. If any of you out there have a geeky bent, I would love some ideas!

    Thank you!

I'm working on the same thing and was thinking about using Romesco sauce in place of custard. I'm also trying to figure out a good way to build an Ood with octopus or squid. I may just end up going with roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and such, I'll let you know what I think up. Whatever we do Jelly Babies will be the dessert.

Really looking forward to the the 50th!

If you can find some white chocolate coated pretzel rods you could just dip one end in some green frosting to make sonic screwdrivers.

We're definitely having jelly babies as well! Although I'm still waiting for my source to come through...:)

Oh, also, one of my guests is vegan.

Jammie Dodgers would work for a dessert item as well, whether homemade or otherwise (they're available on Amazon and elsewhere).

Since he actually called them fish fingers and custard I've been somewhat tempted to do fish-shaped lady fingers with custard as a dessert item. I'd liked that more than any of my savory custard ideas to potentially pair with fish sticks.

What about serving Thai Hor Muk (or is it Har Muk), the catfish custard served in banana leaves. I like the versions served at Aroy, Spoon and TAC.

I love Dr. Who. Your party sounds like a great idea. Regarding the fish sticks and custard, my first thought was simply a garlic aioli- looks custardy enough and would taste good with fish sticks.

Also, perhaps some angel shaped cookies in honor of one of my favorite aliens, the Weeping Angels.

Oh, those are great ideas! I've also remembered that the Ninth Doctor liked bananas, and of course the Fifth Doctor had that celery on his lapel, so I'm hoping to work those in somehow. Some sort of fruit salad with bananas, perhaps, and celery's easy with dip. I especially like the idea of dessert Lady fingers and custard but not sure how to pull that off exactly.

I wanted to do a crispy fish chawanmushi for a similar party. Chawanmushi is essentially a savory custard. I had a delicious cod one at Yusho.

Last night my daughter reminded me of the obvious - there must be a souffle! She also requested grilled polenta shaped like the Tardis, so I guess I'll be making a Tardis mold tonight. I may also see if I can find red bowtie pasta somewhere.

I also found this which is somewhat helpful. The idea of Protein One, Two and Three would certainly simplify things!

A friend of mine actually made fish fingers and an English custard ... Didn't suck.

Forgive me, as I've only watched a couple of episodes. That said, I really took a liking to "The Snowman." Not sure if that's too post-season, but if not, you could do something kitschy with snowmen. http://foodgawker.com/tag/snowman/

    Gallifrey'd rice or whatever.
Maybe some chocolate milk? Yoo know, Yoo-Who.

Might be a bit of copout, but what about foods that have classic 'companions'? Peanut butter and jelly, chips and dip, mashed potatoes and gravy, cheese and crackers, cookies and milk, etc

Oh, and apparently there is a Doctor Who recipe book. I haven't bought it, but on Amazon you could look through the table of contents for ideas.

Let us know what you end up doing! Sounds like a great time.

Too late now, but while I was thinking about yesterday's special and recent Who in general I realized that one of us really should have suggested a souffle. Anyway, hope whatever you made turned out well.

Oh yeah, we definitely did some souffles:

    Image

Harper had her heart set on Dalek cupcakes, and we left her in charge of that one - she did a great job for her first decorating of any type!

    Image

My longtime dream of making an Ood out of squid and octopus was crushed by people with shellfish allergies and a number of young kids who never would have touched it. I took a different approach and went with roast pork, roasted mushrooms and fennel, homemade egg noodles in a sage/butter sauce, and pickled radishes. All in all I think it came out pretty Ood-like.

    Image

The jelly babies were devoured before we could get a picture (again, damned young kids!), and we did schnitzel fingers with a Mornay sauce in place of fish fingers and custard.

I can't wait to do it again in another 50 years!

That Ood is awesome. I went with shortbread cookies and custard (my first attempt ever) for fish fingers and custard, and I had a guest who brought fish fingers and a custard pie (we were so busy watching the show we let the fish fingers burn!). Actually, the fish fingers, because they were mostly bread, didn't taste too bad with the custard. We had I'm-Still-Not-Ginger cookies, bowtie pasta salad, banana bread (for the 9th Doctor) and some other random things. I still have Jelly Babies - will post a pic just as soon as I figure out how to do that here. :)
