For those who use facebook,Nick and George's now has a page http://www.facebook.com/NickAndGeorgesRestaurant with their complete menu and a great picture of the original location. Just had the meatloaf sammich and those one-of-a-kind fries. My favorite burger and garlic dressing reside here, too. :D

Hands down the steak sandwich can be found at Capital Grille, ribeye with onions, it is only served at lunch but it is amazing. That paired with a stoli doli and your all set.

Has anyone had the steak sandwich at Mr. D's on the northwest side?

While not the best I've ever had, Booby's on Milwaukee in Niles makes a very competent skirt steak sandwich.

The last time I had a steak sandwich at Mr. D's (approx 4 months ago), they had changed the steak to a different cut and I didn't enjoy it as much as in the past. It was pretty tough. I'm not sure if it was a one-off or not, so I didn't say anything at the time. I'll be curious to hear how you enjoyed it when you go.

May not be the best, but I agree with Booby's being very solid day in and day out for the past 30 plus years.

They serve an excellent steak sandwich at Players Grill in Highland Park. It's called The Max (cheezy name) and it's a really nice 8-ounce Skirt Steak served on Garlic Bread w/ Fried Onions for $14.99. Not cheap but a very high quality and satisfying offering. I also like that because it's a real piece of skirt steak, you can specify the doneness you prefer.

If near-far NW burbs can stretch to slightly past the Wisconsin border, the Brat Stop on Hwy 50, just west of 94 has an excellent ribeye steak sandwich. Cooked over charcoal behind the bar and served on a brat bun. I actually prefer the steak to the brat at the Brat Stop.

I was with Steve that day, also had Mr. D's steak sandwich. Pretty tough is being kind, I hope it was a one-off as in the past I've very much enjoyed Mr. D's steak sandwich.

I will be driving right past there Saturday. Sadly my wife and I are going to her cousin's funeral. But the sammitch might help with the mood. Thank you!

If cheesesteaks qualify, then I'll submit Boeufhaus - it's a very strong version (Jim's, not Geno's/Pat's variety), and you can get your lunch drinky on with a couple of good cocktails to go with. Also, I'll take an asada torta any day of the week - the cemitas chain is pretty good though quality varies by location (original (or replacement original rather) being the best in my experience).

It's a little fancier than the other's mentioned, but the Au Poivre sandwich at The Reservoir in Uptown is one of my favorite steak sandwiches in the city.

pepper encrusted flat iron steak, arugula, crispy onions, horseradish cream, ciabatta roll

There's another location of Charcoal Delights in the city, on Foster just east of Kedzie. Anyway, I find the food to generally be decent at Charcoal Delights and decided to give this sandwich a try today. While I'm not quite sure what the odd practically neon orange cheese is, I have to say that I agree this is a tasty sandwich. A mess for sure, such that I was cutting it into more manageable small pieces with a knife and fork, but tasty indeed. I've certainly had better steak sandwiches, but I'd recommend this for pretty decent beef flavor.

I will be chastised but a mighty tasty steak sandwich can be had for breakfast at McDonalds. :)

Tender, dribble down your chin juicy, egg and cheese, grilled onions on a soft bagel.

    Sorry. :)

I go to Woodman's every other month to buy some New Glarus. I go around lunch and usually stop at Captain Porkys or the Shanty. Today I went to the Brat Stop.

This was my first (and last) time. I ordered the ribeye sandwich with a side of German potato salad. I was surprised it was served open faced. The bottom was a brat bun cut lengthwise. The good size steak was served on top and overlapped it. There was no top. I found it difficult to cut. It was too chewy and there was too much gristle. It did have a nice flavor.

The German potato salad was overly sweet. The service was poor.

PS - a case of New Glarus was $41 at the Brat Stop and $31 at Woodman's.

Since you opened that door...I prefer to order mine on a "regular" bun. I've found the bagel "freshness" to be rather hit and mostly miss at Micky's. But I do find an occasional, guilty pleasure in their steak, egg n' cheese.

I'll add my recommendation to Ronnie's on The Players Grill. I had the Max and it was very good. It was right on medium-rare. I also had a cup of pasta fagioli that was good.

Ronnie's right about the price. With an ice tea my lunch was $22.
