New Era Starts Monday for Re-Opened Janson’s Drive-In
Iconic, retro drive-in opens its doors on Monday under new ownership after two-year absence.

The iconic Janson’s Drive-In at 9900 S. Western Ave., will re-open on Monday under new ownership.

Local residents were heartbroken when the landmark Beverly restaurant announced it’s closing after 52 years in 2012.

Gus and Wendy Pettas, and developer Mike Ford bought the restaurant and have been renovating it ever since.

Patch called in the middle of a training session over the weekend, but we were told that Janson's will open its doors at 10:30 a.m. Monday.

For the time being, Janson’s will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., seven days a week.

Janson’s is already taking lunch orders by phone at 773-941-6283.

According to my friend, that supermarket closed 2 years ago and Saboo has been closed since December. Apparently the rent for Saboo was too high and they're trying to open in another location near Woori Village.

DeVine has been closed for at least a year now. In fact another restaurant concept from the Pasadita group has already come and gone in that same space.

Related to the second link, the Pasadita Express on Irving Park has re-opened after a temporary closure.

What's also interesting about this is that the Millers, two of the three owners of Bang Bang, have sold their stake in Bang Bang to their other partner. Also, in addition to Baker Miller Pie Co., they will also be opening Baker Miller Flour Co., to sell their flour.

There was a blurb about this on Eater today which stated that they raised $70K through their Bolstr campaign in less than a week, so the truck will probably be coming soon.

A Toda Madre is moving from Geneva to Glen Ellyn per the Trib blog. Their space is slated to convert to a concept kitchen/extra space for Bien Trucha which, apparently, was the original plan before they decided to open ATM.

While not an opening or a closing, it looks like Pho's Thai Cuisine on Lincoln is under new management or something. When I went in there tonight, there were a record 7 people working back in the kitchen, none of whom I recognized as from the family who used to run it. They have a new logo, new carryout menus, fancy new Pho's aprons, a computer system, and a web page now!

The food, while not bad was noticeably not as good - although the crazy spiciness of their "medium" was about the same as usual. I'll give them a couple more tries since they're in the neighborhood, but I'll be sad if the previous family got out of the business.

Another morph: Donut Doctor on Lawrence & Kimball is now Great Grains, and apparently the same venture: donuts, ice cream, coffee and such. I had a Mexican dinner roll type bun with a burst of sugary stuff coming out the top. I think it was an ojo de buey? I found it very dry, but it would have been great fresh with coffee. Their "American" donuts looked pretty good, and the price was certainly right: after noon, donuts are 50 cents, and I walked out with the bun and a bottle of water for $1.75. Then I took a trolley to the picture show.

It's actually Golden Grain and it's Guatemalan-owned now. I tried a couple types of pan Guatemalteco and thought both were very good. Guatemalan snacks on weekends.

There is a Pakistani carryout place called Shahnaz Auntie Kitchen in the spot where Krispy Krunchy Khicken used to live at the corner of Gross Pt Road and Dempster St in Skokie.

It has a small menu of curry, wraps, appetizers and biryani. Haven't tried it yet myself. I think it opened last month (March).

I didn't see the post in Favorite Bites...of 2013, but I was glad to see Norwood Restaurant has risen from the ashes!

It appears that Huaraches Dona Chio has opened a restaurant on Clark Street in Rogers Park. They are taking over the Antonjitos Mexicana space inside Supermercado Carretta at 6906 N. Clark Street. Walking by, I saw two hand written signs in the window. One announced the Grand Opening of Dona Chio, and the other advertised hauraches, quesadillas and gorditas "Estilo D.F."

    Per the Eater:

La Gondola Cucina Italiana at 1258 W Belmont has closed for good. The full-service cousin of the casual Italian spot on Ashland took over the former Joey's Brickhouse space in late 2010. The original, in business for 30 years, remains open. [EaterWire]

Big Ed's BBQ has opened a new location in Libertyville. In the same place where Main Street Smoke house was located at 536 N. Milwaukee. Open everyday starting at 11:00 A.M.

Had lunch today and everything was good, including the burnt ends, brisket, and the fresh cut fries.
