On a recent sunny but frigid January Sunday morning, I stopped in at Roeser's Bakery for one of their
magnificent Custard Walnut Coffee Cake. Seeing that it was early (7:30am), I felt fairly confident the object of my desires
would "still" be sitting there; unsold, awaiting my purchase!
(remarkably, they only produce one of these bad Boys per day)
Standing in front of the counter, stood the stores only customer, an attractive, black pencil jeans clad
young blond, with a variety of piercing(s). As her confusion of choosing from the delectable selections grew,
she kindly offered me the chance to purchase my Custard Coffee Cake (waiting for me, patiently) ahead of her.

As I waited for the clerk to wrap my purchase and "fix" a coffee, I asked her what caused her to be up
and at a Humboldt Park bakery at this early hour.
She replied that she needed to pick up some goodies for her coworkers @ Publican.
Intresting I thought- thinking that they could easily provide their own "fuel" there, in house.
So- when I enquired did she "work in "The Front of The House" or "The Back of The House""?, she responded sheepishly, that she
did work in the kitchen- as a Baker!!!

Man- what a testimonial to Roesers fine assortment of baked goods and doughnuts!
Here was a baker, at one of the areas finest Restaurants, picking up bakery and doughnuts for the chefs and cooks
    at The Publican.

Made me wonder - what a interesting Post that would make- "chefs& bakers, and where they shop".....
Too bad, they weren't able to try "my" Custard Walnut Coffee Cake!
My assistantant and I did though!
    yummmmmmmmmm!

I know- west of WESTERN AVENUE- is far away for some of Chicago's heartiest eaters-
    but- trust me-
you will not find your self sorry for the adventure WEST!

Make sure to find John-The-Baker (pictured below) and share some of your thoughts w/ him

Sorry I missed the original post (and thanks for posting). This looks like an excellent "2" for a 1-2 punch after lunch down the street at Cemitas Puebla.

I have had the custard walnut coffee cake at Roesers. Stay. Very. Much. Away. I will eat literally the whole thing over the course of a day or two. Its really that good. Yes it is magnificent. Years ago there was a bakery on Belmont and Oak Park Avenue called the Village Bakery which was a go to place for my family growning up. They had a version of this coffee cake and I've never seen it anywhere else but Roesers.

And, speaking of Roeser's custard, their éclairs easily rank among the best in the city.

    "Put-Down-That-Cake"-
    and 'Walk-away-from-that-NOW"

    but..... I can't...I just can't........it's sooooooo good!
    @ Stevez- in regards to

    John-The-Baker-Man there
made to me a wonderful off-hand comment in comparison to the drek they serve
up @ Funkin-Gonuts.....and his comment was more or less about what some people consider "Custard-filling",
which John so eloquently referred to a "spooge"

    Spooge.
When was the last time ya used that word in a sentence??!

Oh my, not what I was expecting. Then again once you have to reference a slang dictionary, I should have known better.

I'm a sucker for old-school restaurant signage. If a place has a sign that looks like it's been there since the Truman administration, that’s enough to get me in the door. Luckily Chicago has plenty of beautiful old signs to admire, and sometimes the food is even good too.

Yesterday the gorgeous sign and painted building façade of Roeser's Bakery on North Ave caught my eye as I was exploring Humboldt Park.

They don't make bakeries (or anything, really) that look like this anymore. But how were the goods? Ducking into the cozy air conditioned space was a much needed respite from the hot sun. The crowd was a mix of neighborhood regulars, post-service churchgoers and families with little kids. The kids seemed most excited about the homemade ice cream case, of which I did not get a picture.
    Image

The lady in front of me was a regular and recommended the strawberry maryann. This woman was ordering a box filled with more pastries than I consume in a typical year so I didn't argue with her. I took it to Humboldt Park to eat it in the shade.

I don’t even like desserts that much but this was a good one. Ripe strawberries on fresh sponge cake; cool, creamy and not too sweet. It's hard to have more fun for $3 in my opinion.

Funny timing on your post. I was returning from a brunch in Oak Park Saturday afternoon and decided to take North Avenue instead of the Eisenhower. I passed Roeser's and was absolutely struck by the sign (love the old school signs). I wish I had gone in but now I feel as if I did. Thanks for posting -- I'll have to make sure to visit one of these days.

And I as well. Went to Cemitas Puebla for lunch Sat and mentioned I needed to finally go in here as my fiance has a sweet tooth. Been meaning to for @ least 5 yrs. There's also a new Columbian chix place on the corner a few doors w/of CP that looks worthy of checking out. Smelled great. Suspect wood was involved but not certain. Will try as a 1-2 punch and report back.

These family bakeries have become so rare. We should support them! I plan on going on the tour, very happy to read this thread.
