I wonder whether the layout of Randhurst Village works against its tenants. They have a "main street" type layout (shops including eateries such as E+O) in the middle of the mall, surrounded by the big department stores (Carson's) and movie theaters. So lots of folks head to the big store or movies, park just outside them, and never see anything along the "main street" portion of the mall. And of course there's also no visibility for those shops from those driving by on the three principal thoroughfares going past the mall, either.

I'm pretty sure signing a lease in a complex that boasts "Carson's" as the "big store" is the biggest thing that works against it's tenants.

I'm not sure what the point of this statement is (other than its sarcastic tone), but FWIW, the biggest stores in Randhurst Village are Costco and Home Depot, followed by Carson's (formerly Carson Pirie Scott) and Sports Authority. Annual revenues for all locations of these stores are $112 billion, $78 billion, $3 billion (for its Bon-Ton parent), and $4 billion, respectively.

Corner Cooks and Jerry's in Winnetka are morphing into Taste on Chestnut, under new ownership, according to an e-mail I received from being on their mailing list:

    email wrote:A New Beginning

The address of 507 Chestnut has held a restaurant for many years. When the opportunity became available to purchase the restaurant I didn’t hesitate for even a day!

The process took a little longer than expected, but the end result has been more than rewarding. To be part of such a great community has been a great feeling and that will reflect in the efforts of our team as it moves forward in the next few weeks.

As most of you have read, I am Steven Leviton, the new owner. My background is as an executive chef, and food and beverage manager in known restaurants, clubs, and hotels that many of our customers have frequented, both here and in South Florida. I plan a gentle evolution of menus that our discerning customers have come to expect. I also plan to continue the in-house events, catering, cooking parties and team builders.

In order to have the restaurant move forward to the next generation, we will be closed on Sundays and then close from January 2nd-January 29th. Please stay tuned to the website and your email for our progress reports.

Our eventual name will be "Taste On Chestnut." You will see the new signs closer to the re-opening dates, subject to the village’s approval. The website will also migrate to the new site that we are building. You may also contact us at the same phone numbers as before and info@tasteonchestnut.com

We hope to see you December and again after we re-open! Happy Holiday’s to all!

Coming soon Chipotle Mexican Grill, Naf Naf Grill between CVS Pharmacy and LA Fitness both signs are up already. Also Mariano's grocery store sign is up which is going in the back next to the apartment complex is being constructed now.

Having undergone a somewhat recent change in ownership, The Fast Burrito in Irving Park has changed its name without changing its name... now doing business as El Burrito Rapido. Not sure if this counts as a closing and (re-)opening since I don't think it ever closed during the ownership swap or re-naming.

Pearl Tavern owner Adolfo Garcia is planning to open a meat-focused restaurant inspired by his slaughterhouse-working, butcher-owning Mexican grandparents near Diversey and Sacramento avenues.

Teaming with chef Frank Valdez, most recently the chef de cuisine at West Town's Mexique, Garcia will open Son of a Butcher, a 70-seat eatery across from Fat Rice and a block away from Masa Azul, adding to the growing scene of chef-driven restaurants in the booming Northwest Side neighborhood.

Ruk Sushi and Thai has opened a second location in Albany Park, in the former Coffee Berry spot at Leland/Kimball. Apparently the owner lives in AP and figured out that a good number of customers heading to the Portage Park location were from his neighborhood.

    Per Eater.com...

EVANSTON— Lush Wine and Spirits announced its third location will arrive this spring in Evanston. A wine garden with a 200-year-old oak tree for drinking and snacking are part of the plan at 2022 W. Central St. in downtown Evanston. [EaterWire]

This was written by someone who obviously doesn't have a clue where downtown Evanston is, or how Evanston names its streets (there is no "West" Central Street). And based on the three existing Lush Wine locations already shown on their website, the writer apparently doesn't know how to count up to four, either.

And north of Randolph, in the old Taco Fresco/Millennium Dogs space (180 N Wells), an Asada Mexican Grill has signage up. Can't find any info, but doesn't seem to be related to any other restaurants with the same name.

I still miss the Eppy's that used to be on East Ontario in Streeterville...they more or less had the same salad ingredients as the old Zoom Kitchen, and was a nice option in the neighborhood. And Eppy was quite a character. But you definitely didn't go there for the service, which had a negative, shrill charm of its own. Too bad I apparently missed out on the N. Franklin location; according to Yelp it's now closed as well. So no more matzah ball soup priced by the temperature....

I was always curious of the location choice on N Franklin - right next door to Perry's. Although the quality at the 'sandwich as big as your head' shop has gone downhill a bit (from really good to it's OK), it's still the most food for the money in town. Went to Eppy's once and was very underwhelmed.

Agreed that upscale looks like a stretch. However, they do have a hibachi option, which is hard to find in the city limits. I'll definitely give it a try just because of that.
