Are you kidding me?? $2.87 worth of fresh salmon was enough to feed two adults and a toddler?!?!

How much was it per pound? $2.49??

To clarify, I was making grilled salmon on grilled sourdough sandwiches w/ saffron aioli and arugula. I used less fish per person than I would have if serving without the bread/mayo. We were all satisfied with the portion. Wish I would have taken a picture. The fish was $7/pound.

Steve, they had about 7 tubs of ice with fresh fish/seafood on offer. I recall cod, some nice looking large scallops and shrimp. The man I spoke to said oysters were usually available when I inquired. My impression was that you could get just about anything frozen. So plan ahead for thawing time if you want something specific. They really were very friendly, gave me some business cards and told me to "tell my neighbors." So I posted here. :D

Interesting. Between this, Fish Guy, and Rubino's, this stretch of Elston is becoming Seafood Row. (Or would that be Roe?) Not to mention Hagen's just down the way on Montrose.

The conversation was wandering but pertinent & the waitresses always understood the importance of these late-night meetings. Good times.

This news breaks my heart. Jack's was an integral part of my childhood in so many ways. One of my Dad's best friends was the co-owner of Jack's from the beginning in 1965 (Jerry "Rip" Rubin who many of you will remember well) and at one point, my Dad was considering buying Jack out. We were treated like royalty there. Back in the day, if there was a line or wait, we were seated first as if we had a special reservation (which I guess in a way, we did). It was so cool to run into friends and family there all the time. 95% of the time I would order breakfast no matter when I was in there. I also spent many late nights there. I even met Jackie Mason there around 2AM one time. I still go about once a month, but it's sad how run down it became. Now it all makes sense as to why things were left as they are.

Right on, Ram. As I alluded to on the Kow Kow thread, it's not so much the actual food but the memories. I can remember at least a couple defining conversations about life direction taking place at Jack's, from 40-odd years ago. Jack's was the default. It was the, "...ah, I don't wanna call it a night yet, let's see who's at Jack's." You'd get there, see whose car was in the lot, and from that pretty much knew which rabbit hole you were descending into. :)

It's definitely worth a visit, but my experience with the store weren't great. I used to work in Las Vegas, which has a Seafood City. I started going there because they offered a large seafood section, e.g. lots of whole fish, shellfish, etc. My experiences were mixed to negative, however. Worst smell of all the Asian markets in Vegas (far worse than any I've been to in Chicago), and a nasty bout of sickness from some yellow tail snapper turned me off of the place.

Then again, a brand new SC might not suffer from any of these problems. I'll certainly give it a shot.

I have never tried this pizza, though there once was a big fan who regularly posted here. I cannot wait to try this whenever it materializes.

I could have sworn that Aurelio's had a location near Clark and Fullerton years ago, so I don't think they are complete strangers to the north side, though they have been gone absent from the north side for many years.

I still don't understand why people cheer when a restaurant they don't like closes. If you don't like a place, fine, don't go there. Its existence doesn't hurt you and is a benefit to those who enjoy its cuisine, as well as those for whom it provides employment. Those benefits disappear when it closes - and there are no guarantees that its replacement isn't a fast-food chain, a superfluous dry cleaner, or a vacant storefront.

Like that means anything. Subway has, as far as I can tell, exactly zero territory protection for its franchisees. When I went to grad school downtown, there were two Subways within a block of the school. Last time I checked, there were 18 Subways within a two-mile radius of me. I half expect to see a Subway open in the storage room of another Subway some day.

People root against stuff they don't like. It's just venting and it's human nature, so I'm not sure what isn't understandable about it. I wouldn't read into it too much. It's not like that rooting caused the closing. However, avoiding places one doesn't like may and that's often silent.

The Spice and Tea Exchange just opened up in downtown Evanston. They have tons of spice blends. One whole wall is just spice blends, and they have a small tea section. All the spices go by the ounce, and personally I think they are more expensive than the Spice House. I noticed that their Vietnamese cinnamon was going for $3.79 an ounce. Apparently it is a franchise, and the Evanston store is the first one in Illinois. There were quite a few customers there today, but I think I will stick with the Spice House.

I'd say that's an excellent idea. I'd imagine it might be easier than you might think for the more casual consumer to see the new store and somehow assume it's affiliated with you.

Happened to be on the Westside for the new trail opening (The 606) on Saturday and on the way we drove by Cemitas Puebla on North Ave on the way. Heard they were closing and the doors were locked tight.

Around lunchtime we drove by The Brown Sack and saw that they had also closed.

Never to despair we were able to grab a couple of sandwiches at the new addition of El Cubanito. Very nice and tasty. I still miss the old shack next door.
