Well first of all, once they made the changes to serve breakfast at the same time as the regular menu there was really no reason not to do it all the time. Beyond that, there are a lot of people who do shift work that would appreciate having breakfast on their schedule. Also, if you are hungry and need a quick meal and are near a McD you can now have the one thing they make that is "real" the round egg. Finally, you can add a round egg to anything for about $.80, so if you like a fried egg on your burger, that's an extra $.80 for McD's.

You've never had an Egg McMuffin?!? My goodness!
I personally think it's on the short list of cleverest fast food inventions ever. All you McD's haters out there, flame on, I don't care.
Some people will get an order of two hash brown patties and insert them into the Egg McMuffin. I haven't tried that yet, but they're both tasty products, together or separate.
I say all this as someone who hardly ever eats fast food, not because I make a point of avoiding it but because I don't drive much.
The only way an Egg McMuffin could be better than it is would be if the English muffin halves were dripping with melted butter like the ones I have at home, although I realize that would not be ideal for eating in the car.

Back in the 1970s, and to this day, you could get a Breakfast Jack all day at Jack-In-The-Box.
