I'm on tap to pick a place to eat this Sunday and I got nothin'. My companion lives near the South Blvd. Purple line in Evanston and has a 1-year old tot, so she'll be driving. I need a recommendation for a place that is reasonably priced, no fast food. She requested somewhere within a 20-minute ride, but that's quite a lot, I assume. There must be booze or everything falls apart.

    Thank you.

Maybe Trattoria D.O.C. (primarily pizza) or the new La Principal (Mexican)? Lucky Platter (same owners as La Principal - funky American) is very kid-friendly, too.

I agree with all of the suggestions above. I would also add L. Woods and Wholly Frijoles, both in nearby Lincolnwood.

If Lincolnwood is under consideration, I'd recommend GNR Psistaria Greek Taverna.

Wildwood Tavern sounds like it could fit the bill. I just had lunch there today. Both the onion loaf and my cooked perfectly medium rare patty melt were outstnding.

We recently had a lovely meal at That Little Mexican Cafe in Evanston. I'd never been before, so I ordered my usual "test dish" to see if they're worthy, chicken enchiladas with salsa verde (although I substituted al pastor for the chicken since I was in a porky mood). Not especially adventurous, I'll admit, but it serves as a good baseline for future orders. If they can't get that right, I'm not likely to try anything else on the menu.

The enchiladas were wonderful, well stuffed with al pastor and smothered with an intensely flavored salsa verde; not a lot of heat, but plenty of tang from the tomatillas. Their version of refried beans was a pleasant change, featuring more whole beans than mashed, and solid flavor. Even the rice was better than most, and improved even more by the addition of the house made pico de gallo.

I started my meal with some excellent ceviche and a margarita. It was mixed table side, then served in a small tumbler with enough left over in the shaker for a refill.

Nice atmosphere, well lit and not at all noisy. It fits the bill for price and distance, and appears to be 1-year old friendly.

I don't think it has a liquor license.

Nope, no booze. But pie is always a good idea.

If you travel south on Chicago Avenue as it turns into Clark Street south of the cemetery, you have all of the many taco possibilities of North Clark St. in Rogers Park. Very short drive from South Blvd.

El Rey Del Taco is on the corner of Touhy and Clark. It's been the subject of other strings on the site. The have a parking lot and serve alcohol.
