We recently had a lovely meal at That Little Mexican Cafe in Evanston. I'd never been before, so I ordered my usual "test dish" to see if they're worthy, chicken enchiladas with salsa verde (although I substituted al pastor for the chicken since I was in a porky mood). Not especially adventurous, I'll admit, but it serves as a good baseline for future orders. If they can't get that right, I'm not likely to try anything else on the menu.
The enchiladas were wonderful, well stuffed with al pastor and smothered with an intensely flavored salsa verde; not a lot of heat, but plenty of tang from the tomatillas. Their version of refried beans was a pleasant change, featuring more whole beans than mashed, and solid flavor. Even the rice was better than most, and improved even more by the addition of the house made pico de gallo.
I started my meal with some excellent ceviche and a margarita. It was mixed table side, then served in a small tumbler with enough left over in the shaker for a refill.
Nice atmosphere, well lit and not at all noisy. It fits the bill for price and distance, and appears to be 1-year old friendly.
