What's the real story on these two Skokie hot dog stands that used to co-exist next to each other before Big Herm's closed?

The tale I recall from my youth is that Big Herm's built the larger place across the street, but when getting rid of the old building they accidentally sold the name as well...sounds like an urban legend to me.

i grew up in skokie and at one time both were open across the street from each other, one was big herms and the other herms palace, an older man named moe owned the little one and the shane family owned the big one and still does today, herms palace was always better in my opinion needing a full time parking lot traffic coordinator lol, the little herms was torn down and later the whole shopping center it was in, to this day i still stop at herms each time i visit mom and scott never forgets my order even if away a year

Here's some of the obituary of the original "Herm"...I know there was some type of family squabble regarding these two places as they never wanted to acknowledge or credit one another,

I also remember both owners out on the street berating customers if they dared to park in the wrong lot when visiting one of the two hotdog stands. These guys hated each other with extreme passion. I've always been a Poochie's man myself, so my visits to either of the Herm's were (and continue to be) rare.

    Hi,

The obituary reminded me of this thread when Big Herm's on Washington St. closed.

Natural casing dogs, sport pepper, mustard, onion, steamed poppy seed bun. Run it though the garden, no thank you.
