Tokens & Tankards opened recently in what was previously Ye Olde Town Inn in Mount Prospect. They've got a menu that's pretty basic with some gastropub nods and some geek-cute names (dragon's egg, gandalf's grilled cheese) , and a room full of pinball and video machines. Board games are available in the dining area, and it's generally a fun time.

Fried pickles were very tasty, served with a malt vinegar aioli. The serving is somewhat skimpy but pretty cheap ($5 for four large slices).

SueF had the Croque Madame, which is a very messy sandwich with a very runny fried egg on the top (I'd have sent it back for a little more cooking, but it was just as she likes it). Accompanied by skin-on fries, she liked it... but it's not very board-game friendly.

I had the Token Burger, basic burger with choice of cheese (havarti, cheddar, blue), lettuce, tomato, onion. Decent burger (especially with some of the aioli from the pickles added), pretzel roll, same fries. The Tankard burger is open face with havarti and onion stout gravy.

There's a pretty extensive drinks menu from which we didn't partake, but we'll probably go primarily for the video and pinball. Lots of classics including Wizard of Wor, Joust, Sinistar, Gorgar, and a very new ($1/game) Hobbit pinball machine.

Tokens can be banked on site, and charged to your food bill, 4/$1 or 25/$5.

What is patriotism, but the love of good things we ate in our childhood?

Does it seem kid-friendly? I have a 11 & 7 year old that I think would have fun there.

This place is right on for tabletop RPG or strategy gamers who also happen to be foodies - big tables, very accommodating service, and no shortcuts in the kitchen. Everything ordered was a notch above average, from fish & chips to burgers to a nice Scotch egg, and the serious beer and cider list (including some draft ciders) creates a nice Ye Tavyrne vibe even before the kitschy food menu names. Charcuterie board included some especially nice cooked ham, fresh rosemary, almonds, and apricot preserves in addition to standard cured meats. Favorites of a long day at the board included a bitter salad with chicory, rustic house croutons, really excellent funky chunked Stilton, and scratch dijon vinaigrette, and the bangers & mash, with an ale gravy and beer-braised cabbage. The Tudor-style building is right near the train station, and has easy free parking. It strikes the right vibe.

    Sadly, they've shut their doors.

Like I posted in the openings and closings thread, T&T did post a Google survey that seems to indicate they hadn't totally closed the door to the possibility of reopening. I sadly never got to visit T&T before it closed down, so I filled out this survey myself. Maybe if enough people fill this out(including those who never visited), they might reopen?
