The May ELG lunch will be posted soon, but I wanted to post a notice about the June lunch, since I will be out of town in May. We will meet at Riobamba Latin Kitchen, an Ecuadorian restaurant in Glenview (1869 Waukegan Road, North of Lake St. on the East side of Waukegan, near Reagan Meats). Lunch will be Monday June 12th at 12:30.

I will bump this when I return on June 4th.

See, I thought this was a good idea....

This must have gone up right after I searched to see if anyone had written about it.

Count me in. Looking forward to having ordering power here.

(Usual blather about unpredictable work schedule... I will be responsible about updating....)

This will be an opportunity for The Esteemed Coordinator of the LTH North lunch group to show some backbone in response to this blatant invasion of our territory by the elg. The May lunch in Skokie could be considered in the DMZ, but Glenview does not even touch Evanston. I feel that this needs to be faced by overwhelming force from LTH North. I, for one, will be there*.

    Imperialism at work!

    But you are welcome nonetheless.

As Esteemed Coordinator, I hereby declare June 12 to be a joint venture between the LTH North Lunch Group and the Evanston Lunch Group that can't seem to figure out how to read a map!

This also give me a break from having to plan a June meal for (what appears to be) disgruntled Minions in the ranks.

Barring my demise during or after the May LTH North meeting, I'm in!

As someone born in Evanston, but who spent most of my formative years (0 - 18) on Rolling Pass in Glenview, and as a grad of Glenbrook South, I feel qualified to state that Glenview is not too far from Evanston that it can't be included in the realm of the Evanston Lunch Group™'s environs. (And, in fact, we actually had one lunch at Gary's house, which is in ... you guessed it ... Glenview.)

While the informally-organized and highly congenial Evanston Lunch Group™ may not have the internal political intrigue of the LTH North Lunch Group, we do retain the right to organize our Evanston Lunch Group™ events. As such, the June 12 event at Riobamba is officially an Evanston Lunch Group™ event, although members of other LTH Lunch groups are also welcome to attend, as always (especially if they show their membership cards).

New cards will be available at both the May and June Evanston Lunch Group™ gatherings.

Lunches held by both groups - the Evanston Lunch Group™ and the LTH North Lunch Group - are open to all, and I personally have enjoyed the warm hospitality of both groups. Although I am only one voice, I would welcome the possibility of jointly-designated events, here as well as in the future. Of course, there are no strict territorial boundaries; both groups have held events over a wide and overlapping area.

Here, as promised is the bump (I will call Riobamba in the next few days to make sure that our numbers will not be a problem).

UPDATE: The numbers are not a problem. Riobamba does not take reservations, but I was assured that it won't be a problem. I will try to arrive a little early.

I'm mildly surprised to hear that. The available seating is not very large, iirc.

I'll try to arrive early myself, and bring my elbows to try to protect some turf.

I just noticed the LTH North Bat-Signal in the sky. While we LTH Northers may plot and connive behind the back of our Esteemed Coordinator, we will back him when our territory is threatened. I'll be there.

Regretfully I must cancel for tomorrow's lunch. Too much work to do and not enough time to do it. I'm confident that my minions will do me proud in my absence. EC.

It was another friendly get-together over good food today at Riobamba:

    Image

I was slow on the photos, so I apologize for not snapping them for the starters:

yuca fries with chimichurri aioli (click here for more info about yuca)

maduros - sweet plantains with chihuahua cheese

tostones - crispy plantain with chimichurri aioli

I did manage to get photos of most of the entrees:

hornado - slow roasted pork with hominy, and pico
    Image

smokey shrimp - smoked paprika and coriander marinated shrimp with rice and veggies
    Image

seco de pollo - chicken braised with beer, peppers, onions on yellow rice
    Image

And a couple of the sides we ordered:

abue's tamale - corn masa stuffed with chicken sofritto
    Image

beet salad - beets, carrots, onion, lime vinaigrette
    Image

I also missed photos of the cheesy tamale and of the shrimp + chorizo entree, sorry.

When you're ordering an entrée and a side, you get any beverage for a dollar. Available beverages included bottled soft drinks both domestic and Mexican (Jarritos), and a soft drink dispensing machine with creative flavors. I liked my agave vanilla cream soda!

I liked this place. I thought the food was tasty overall, and the portions were extremely generous, representing a good value.
