Hi- I have been to quite a few Meijer's stores in Michigan. I have only been to the Niles store here twice. The Niles store is 90% groceries, and 10% department store, where as most of the Meijer's store are 50% groceries and 50% department store. Meijer's does have a better produce section than most grocery stores do, and they have way more local produce than Jewel ever has. You go to any Meijer's store in August and they will have Michigan peaches. One thing I never see at Meijer's though is local strawberries, although I never see them at any of the other stores around here either, including places like Fresh Farms.

Meijer's will be opening a series of stores throughout Wisconsin from Milwaukee to Eau Claire.

In Wisconsin, the Journal-Sentinel reports that Meijer executives say "they intend to expand in cities across Wisconsin in much the same way the company has grown across similar size cities in its home state of Michigan ... With a distribution center already up and running in Pleasant Prairie, Meijer says it is investing $750 million in Wisconsin and that it eventually will create 7,000 jobs in the state."

Meijer currently has stores in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky, and employs 60,000 people, the story notes.

I like visiting Meijer's whenever an opportunity presents itself. They have products on their shelves I hadn't seen at Jewel and Dominicks. They have White Lily Flour. I found at an Indiana outpost pickles from Tony Packos. Visiting a Meijer's offers similar experience as visiting an out-of-town grocery store. There is just enough unusual for our area selections on the shelf to make the visit interesting.

I get a similar thrill visiting Strack and Van Til.

Just for chuckles, I check where several grocery chains are headquartered:

    Dominick's (Safeway) - Pleasanton, CA
Garden Fresh Market - Wheeling, IL
    Jewel (Albertsons) - Boise, Idaho
    Meijers - Grand Rapids, MI
Strack and Van Til - Highland, IN
    Woodman's - Janesville, WI
Sunset Foods - Highland Park, IL

The further the grocery store is headquartered, the less dynamic the shopping experience. Those closest are much more dynamic and certainly Sunset cannot be more customer responsive. I far more enjoy my visits to Meijer's, Strack and Van TIl and Woodman's than to Jewel or Dominick's.

When both Jewel and Dominick's were locally owned with their buyers living in the area, both were better than they are today. I do visit Jewel for shopping between 10 PM and midnight, because I have no other choice.

H-Mart and Meijers proximity to each other will now allow more frequent visits. I realize H-Mart headquartered in New York is an exception largely due to the niche market they fill of Asian grocery superstore.

Thanks Joy for the alert. You've made my day.

    Regards,

I would agree with this completely.

However, if you look at Kroger's, they are pretty vibrant in MOST markets. When they make an acquisition, they leave the local brand alone (i.e., Harris Teeter, Fred Meyer's, Fry's, etc.) and allow the local management to run the stores. Where the chain can benefit from Kroger's (buying power, private label program, etc.), it is implemented. Where the local marketing is working, they leave it alone.

By the way, the Albertson-Safeway merger required a divestiture of a number of supermarkets in the west. Several hundred stores were sold to Haggen, an chain out of Seattle. They shot themselves in the foot with major pricing errors where the new prices were significantly higher than the old prices ...

Hi- Does anybody know when the Skokie Meijer's is going to open up, and where it is going to be located? I noticed that there is some construction going on at McCormick and Oakton, and I was wondering if that is where the Meijer's is going to be built? Thanks, Nancy

    Hi,

Driving west on Golf Rd, there was a guy waving Meijer store closing. Remembering the deal with cat food when Dominick's closed, I stopped at Meijers. Cat food section mostly cleaned out, though the Fancy Feast cost more than when on sale at my usual spot.

Most foodstuffs was 20% off, so I purchased items that never really go on sale: yeast, cane sugar fine ground, molasses, Crisco, Wondra and baking bags. I did buy White Lily flour, both regular and self-rising for making biscuits.

The cereal aisle still had a lot of product. I assume people expect better prices before pouncing.

It was also my go-to store for buying dry ice without any special arrangements.

It is just the Golf Road location that is closing by June 18th.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Cathy, just FYI, the GFS store in the Golf Mill mall has dry ice right by the door.

Meijer will offer a new home delivery service for groceries at all its suburban Chicago stores by midsummer, Meijer CEO Rick Keyes said Thursday.

Does anybody know if Meijer's is ever going to open up a store in Morton Grove at Dempster and Waukegan where Dominick's used to be? I first heard they were going to open up a store in Skokie, and then that apparently got nixed, and then I heard they were going to open up a store at Dempster/Waukegan in Morton Grove a few years ago. I have not heard anything else since then. Does anybody know what is going on?

Meanwhile they closed Meijer located just west of Dempster and Milwaukee. It is one store where one could reliably buy dry ice by just walking in.

By looking at their website, there are far more stores in the southern and southwest suburbs than north.
