Simple, traditional, sat at the counter and watched the grillman work.


I didn't even look at the menu as my planned choice was pretty traditional but on the chalkboard in the back my all time favorite was the entrée special today, Hot Beef (open face sandwich). They rotate the specials and not on a regular basis so it will be a crap shoot until the stars align again.

Sorely tempted but I stuck to my plan. Also on the board was the two soups of the day of which I chose...


A dash of salt, some crackers and I dipped pieces of the wrapped dinner roll.


1/2 pound, lettuce, tomato, onions (requested grilled).
Ketchup, mustard, mayo, and a dash of hot sauce. Not over cooked and one patty was verging on my favorite, medium rare.

Intuitional fries, cooked lightly but thoroughly. Might ask for them well done next time.


One old and cranky waitress but she perked up tending the money.
One younger and sunny waitress. Fun to talk to.

Just a diner, nothing exceptional and it didn't suck.

It's not that kind of Deli, in fact, it's more of a dog/beef stand than a deli, though they do have a display case where they store a lot of their cold cuts and other stuff. If anything, it skews more Italian than Jewish.

The gal from work who joins me from time to time had found some information that led her to believe it is Greek.

There's no doubt it's Greek owned, but I was talking about the food. There are no Jewish deli items on the menu. The stuff they have skews Italian. There's sausage and beef, plus Italian type subs (not to mention the great burgers, which would be my recommendation).

PS Good luck tonight at Marie's. Monday is the regular pizza guy's night off, so pizzas can be inconsistent on Mondays.

The pizza was fine. Before hand I was thinking about what a second shift cook could do to the pizza and it really boiled down to the cooking.

This was cooked fine, crust nice and crispy with a slight blackening, just the correct amount of browning on the cheese.

They did a great job!

Could be fun! I am especially looking forward to the English, Irish and Greek.

Once or twice a month, I set up in an office in Mt P for the day, right around Wolf and Central, near the Walmart/Aldi anchored mall of sorts. Excited to follow this thread.

We SGD Dubu'ed today, and kinda left underwhelmed. I had the Soup with ramen, beef, "spicy." It was decent, but very one note, and got boring. Also ordered the beef kahlbi, which could have probably saved the meal if it had more crispy bits from the grill. Nice flavor, but just...limp.

Panchan was excellent, and quickly replenished. Panchan was easily the star of our meal.

We were trying to decide if we would ever return, couldn't come to any agreement. Nothing popped enough to make anyone speak up.

Panther, if you're still around these parts, our regular lunch spots are Jd's Brew and Q, and also Emerson's for a damn decent 1/2 lb burger with fancy (ish) toppings, and excellent fries.

Back to SGD, there are a few spots in that mall that look interesting, no?

While I was there several people came in for the Turkey Sub so maybe I ordered the wrong thing?

Owner was a generally nice guy, warmly greeting everyone who came in and teased with the regulars. Even his assistant has taken on his customer style.



Good burger! Nice char and a lot of fresh vegetables and he hit medium rare pretty well. Bun was losing the fight though. Even the fries that happened to touch the burger ended up with char flavoring.

You weren't kidding about the fries! The house cut fries that he cooks them well done and nice and crispy. A healthy shake of salt. I didn’t see the fry cutter in action but I’ll take your word for it.


I was regretting that I wasn't going to be able to try their 'housemade' Italian Beef but then remembered it was the main ingredient in this sandwich.

Pickles, Swiss cheese, onions and special sauce (mayonnaise? ). It definitely was an eclectic set of ingredients that not be for everyone but it was fun. As with many housemade beefs this one also verged on having a roasted flavor.


Didn't suck at all.

Next trip I might give the Turkey Sub a whirl, or a double cheeseburger (made with 2 - 1/4 pound patties).

My boss mentioned to me that my contract will be extended into December! Looking forward to a few more remaining ethnicities foodwise and revisiting some of the great area breweries!

Interesting. I drive by regularly (including tomorrow) and never noticed it. Are you going to try the beer float? Since several desserts feature their vanilla gelato, I wonder if it is savory or at least less sweet than typical ice cream.

Another recommendation if its not out of your way for lunch in Glenview on Golf Road is the old school Greek owned 'The Works' hotdog/burger/gyros fast food restaurant that has been in the same location for decades. The interior looks to be from the 70's with wood paneling like those old Ditka SNL sketches which can be described a suburban hole in the wall in a nondescript strip mall on Golf Road. They have great char grilled burgers as well as top notch gyros sandwiches.

The Works looks interesting! Pretty much a standard Greek hotdog stand. They do have a special sandwich which bears their name (so it must be good? )

I always look for the unique items. The grilled Greek chicken also looks good. Also, anyplace that still serves cornroll tamales is OK in my book.

BGD also looks great but the have no lunch hours. Maybe for a snack on 'after work Beer Days'? 5:00 is still pretty late for that.

After seeing the savory pastries Gary posted about Tous les Jours, I was anxious for some odd ways of eating hot dogs... and they have several others that looked good too, but (a) it's cold out and the pastries aren't hot and crisp, and (b) I noticed a new place in the same strip, Bun Cha Hanoi, that was formerly Soupbelly Hot Pot. I'd never gotten a chance to try Soupbelly, their online photos look good, my bad for not getting there sooner. Bun Cha's facebook page says grand opening was October 7, they've got a pretty good-sized crowd in there at lunch today.

But Bun Cha looks like it's going for street-oriented Vietnamese: no caramel chicken in clay pot, none of the fancy stuff, but grilled meats served with rice or noodles, a couple bahn mi, and pho.

They've got two lunch specials: A mini pho for $5.99 and a mini version of short rib with rice for $7.99. I'll try the latter next time. You can get the pho with meatballs or steak. The meatballs were the bland rubbery kind (in a good way) you get in pho. Good broth, not the deepest flavor, but nice big plate of herbs, lime, jalapeno and bean sprouts. Decent size for lunch. The iced coffee for $4.25 seemed a bit steep, but it's strong and sweet enough to dilute nearly 2:1.

Oh, one more place on that strip: Harry's Kitchen and Catering is generic-sounding, but is very Korean: cold carry out banchan, kimbap and other dishes, and a $7.99/lb steam table with all sorts of interesting things in it, stews, mandoo, etc. Could be a good choice for a quick carry-out picnic at The Grove.

Met Panther in the Den and diversedancer for lunch at Paik's today, nothing earth shattering but on the spectrum of tasty with quick friendly service, reasonable pricing and comfortable seating. Refills of water and refreshing roasted corn/barley tea served with a smile.

I dug my lunch of Tangsuyuk, Korean style sweet sour pork, and taste of PitD's oniony Jjamppongbap, but the winner was DD's Jaengban-jjajang.

Korean style wings were good, crunchy and lightly sweet, but Bonchon Glenview right next door, which is now open for lunch, has them beat.

Pictures did not turn out, I had a spot on my lens, though the image I took as I walked in of the ever present Hungry Hound on Paik's front window came through clear as a bell. His video review may be found ----> Here

Panther in the Den, I admire how you have taken a work assignment and turned it into Adventures in Eating & Drinking!

My one visit to that strip mall led to a conundrum. We settled on paik's and so we ordered noodle dishes and a couple appetizers. The meal was good but wish there was a way to also order wings from Bonchon and the soondubu from sgd at the same time

My pictures from Paik's are not so good either. When I first bought (used) the camera, I set the ISO fairly high to use with available light, but it was not high enough (or autofocus not good enough) for at Paik's, so my photos are not in good focus. And I could not figure out how to lower the ISO back to where I could use the flash.
