    LTH,

My wife wife was in full-on recuperation mode today, pillows on the couch, stack of dvd's, cordless phone and it was up to me to do my part to speed her recovery, which, of course, included a nice lunch. Her usual of Ritz crackers with a dollop of Nutella, sprinkle of imitation bacon chips, mashed King Oscar sardines and a few drops of Texas Pete didn't seem quite up to the task, so, thinking of Kasia's recent post extolling the virtues, The Fish Guy for lobster rolls, especially given my wife loves lobster, seemed a natural.

I preordered, a necessity, and arrived just as they started to make my lobster rolls. You don't get much fresher than this.

Celery and lemon zest compliment nicely.

In addition to terrific looking fish, they had drop dead gorgeous heirloom tomatoes, which I requested be added to our Lobster Rolls.

Lobster rolls were delicious, nicely complimented by Texas Pete and a glass of Schweppes Bitter Lemon I picked up at Minos (post forthcoming) last week.

My wife is feeling better already, but is now wondering what's for dinner. :) Thanks again Kasia and Amscrap.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

I came back to this thread I started, about 9 months ago, in order to edit the picture URLs because I've relocated the photos. Little did I think that not only is it still being read but that there have been recent postings!

After looking at Gary's pictures, I can't believe his food came from the same place mine did. His pics look so good that I want to eat my monitor. Mine look like something that came out of a cat food can.

Just goes to show ya how important it is to have superior camera skills!

The ONLY place in Chicago I've ever found a lobster roll worthy of its namesake: The Blue Crab Lounge at Shaw's Crab House (21 East Hubbard). They use the same authentic flat-sided buns I grew up with in New England, buttered and lightly toasted, and the recipe is also the same: premium MAINE lobster meat (claw and knuckle), tossed with some mayo and lemon juice. The price is also reasonable at $18.95 a roll (which includes fries and a side of cole slaw). The only caveat: make sure you're the only person at the table ordering the roll. Why? Whenever I come by myself, I always end up getting a roll heaping with large chunks of lobster. However, any time two or more people have gotten the sandwich, they always end up skimping on the meat. You'd be better off getting one roll and sharing it. I've been coming to Shaw's for the past six years, and (on average) have two or three lobster rolls per month. Always great! Don't even try to compare theirs with the so-called "roll" at THE FISH GUY. The bread is supermarket-bought, and the meat is bland and stringy: that's why they mince it up into tiny pieces! Ugh!

The lobster roll fell off the menu at the Schaumburg location. Are you sure they still sell it at the Chicago location? If so, I will be there!! I used to go get one at the Schaumburg location every few months and was really disappointed when I went there last time and they said it was no longer on the menu.

Todays Shaws Oyster Bar ( formerly Blue Crab Lounge), Chicago menu shows the New England Lobster roll alive and well under Sandwiches @ $18.95.

Has anyone had the lobster rolls at The Lobster Place inside the Chelsea Market in Manhattan? I had one recently while visiting, and I thought it was excellent, they even used the traditional bread (so I was told). Just the right amount of chunky lobster, mayo and lemon, priced at $13. I'm just curious as to how their rolls compare with the real deal in Maine.

I took kithat's place in being the first to post on the
    Andersson's lobster roll

I would be able to compare it to the Fishguy Market's offering if I hadn't been under the impression that this thread referred to Dirk's Fish and Gourmet shop when I was unexpectedly driving around at lunch time last week.

    Hi,

I finally had an opportunity to try Captain Porky's lobster roll, which he offers for $5:

    Image

While there is genuine lobster used, it is not Maine lobster. They use lobster tail from off the coast of South America, which some may suggest has a subtle taste. Making a mayonnaise-based salad with this lobster is somewhat futile because any taste the lobster may have is drowned by the sauce.

Captain Porky's bakes their own rolls. Unfortunately they sliced it the wrong way for a lobster roll.

From my point of view, my curiosity is satisfied. I can live without ever having another of his lobster rolls. Yet I dream of his shrimp and oysters!

    Zion, IL
    Phone: (847) 872-4460
    Monday-Saturday: 9 AM – 10 PM
    Sunday: 9 AM – 9 PM

    Regards,
