Any places that do a great job with these? I like the ones at Toast and Miller's Pub downtown, but not consistently wowed in terms of freshness and/or presentation.

I highly recommend Cheesecake Factory for a fresh, large, high quality Cobb salad.

I personally like Wildfire's "chopped" salad - perfect balance of blue cheese, bacon, chicken, avocado, sweet corn, corn chips and citrus dressing

I actually like the Cobb at J. Patrick's. Lightly dressed fresh greens (romaine) with champagne vinaigrette, caringly cooked hardboiled egg served sliced (not diced), big chunks of avocado. The grilled chicken is cooked to order and served warm on the salad.

    Any updates to this topic?

I know the original Brown Derby Cobb was made of leftovers, but most versions I've seen are very loose interpretations. I'm ready to give up on restaurants and pull out my tuna can mold and make my own.

    Help!

The Cobb Salad seems to have a fairly standard list of ingredients: lettuce, tomatoes, bacon, chicken breast, hard-boiled eggs, avocado, blue cheese, and chives, with a vinaigrette dressing. A lot of places serve a chopped salad that is very similar to Cobb salad; for example, the ingredients in the chopped salad at Maggiano's (which is very good, BTW) are almost exactly the same as a Cobb: "Chopped iceberg lettuce, diced tomatoes, crumbled bleu cheese, green onion, avocado, crispy Prosciutto, tossed in our signature House Dressing" (with chicken optional).

There was an extended discussion about chopped salads here recently, and you might find the recommendations there to be helpful; click here.

The origin and proper ingredients for a Cobb Salad (and the importance of ordering the salad with all of them represented) caused no small discussion on an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, a portion of which can be seen here:

The Cobb Salad at Bamboo Blue in Homewood is a favorite meal of mine -- although the dressing is more of a homemade garlic dressing rather than a vinagrette. It may be the best salad dressing I've ever had.

The last time I was at the Chicago Depot having my favorite pot roast sandwich, Robert began making a Cobb Salad. There was no holding back on any of the ingredients-it was enormous. The customer said it was the best she'd eaten. I don't order salads as a main course very often, but my next meal at the Depot will be a Cobb.

On our last visit to the depot, the wife actually had the Cobb salad, and wasn't particularly impressed. The worst part was the egg: horribly overcooked, with a rubbery white and a brown/green yolk. Add to that bland chicken and watery lettuce and tomatoes, and I doubt she'd order it again.

It was, however, huge. And, on this occasion, not made by Robert.

I have learned over time, unfortunately, that if Robert is not doing the cooking, stick with the soup and a sandwich.

Geppetto's in Oak Park has an excellent Cobb salad.

No kidding? With their salad bar (included with most meals, I believe), I'm sure most people never order the Cobb. Interesting.

The Daily Bar and Grill in Lincoln Square has a very good Cobb salad. I actually go out of my way to get it. Occasionally they will have a so-so soup available.

Just tried the Cobb salad at Wilde on Broadway(south of Belmont) and it was really good. A friend told me that it was his favorite and I was very pleased.
